Guidance Office
The Guidance Department at Saint John Vianney High School is dedicated to providing students with academic, career, and personal counseling to support their overall well-being and success. The department offers services such as academic advising, schedule planning, standardized test preparation, college and career planning, and personal counseling to help students navigate through their high school years and prepare for their future endeavors. Our guidance counselors are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where students can explore their interests, set goals, and receive the assistance they need to thrive academically and personally. The guidance staff is here to assist, encourage, challenge, and support students as they set goals and make decisions that yield both personal and college-bound benefits. Above all, the mission of the Guidance Department is to guide all students as they develop the talents and gifts that God has given them.

What To Expect
Freshman Year
The year will begin with the Freshmen Orientation Meeting which includes the Guidance Department and discusses academic opportunities with parents and students. All students will meet with their guidance counselor multiple times throughout the year both individually and in groups to develop a 4 year plan for high school. They will be encouraged to stretch themselves academically and begin building a resume that includes participation in at least one of the 35+ clubs at SJV. Parents will be invited to attend a Freshmen Information Session in the fall that will roadmap the entirety of the high school experience. Students will be introduced to the college planning software SCOIR and will also take the PSAT.
Junior Year
During junior year, students will continue to regularly meet with their counselor. They will have a 60-90 minute individualized meeting with their counselor and parents for college planning purposes. Juniors will take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. While continuing to build their resumes, juniors are encouraged to meet with college representatives at SJV and visit colleges and universities. Student-athletes who wish to continue their sport at the collegiate level will complete the NCAA Clearinghouse Eligibility Application online. At the end of the school year, the Guidance Department will host a parent information evening to map out the college application process in detail.
Sophomore Year
Students will continue to meet their counselor numerous times throughout the year. The Guidance Department will host an academic and college planning session to outline the second half of high school and life after SJV. Sophomores are welcome to attend presentations given by colleges and universities at SJV college visits and fairs during lunchtime visits. Students will again take the PSAT and will be introduced to the Pre-ACT.
Senior Year
Prior to the start of senior year, students will be invited to a College Application Boot Camp where counselors will work with students in groups and individually on the Common Application, writing college essays, and all other application specifics. Counselors will continue to meet with students extensively during the college application process. A financial aid information evening will be offered to parents to provide details on the FAFSA, CSS profile, and all other college finance-related needs.
